Open Adoption – what does it mean

Wow, this is my very first post.  I’ve wanted to do a blog for a long time but haven’t put the time into it.  In case you are wondering about us – I am Lisa, my technically superior pumpkin hubby is Rick, Gracie girl is our Bichon/Yorkie, and Max is our stud Poodle/Bichon.  That makes four pumpkins and we have started the domestic adoption process for our fifth pumpkin.  Our agency is www.openadopt.org and they have been amazing so far.  We just finished our home study visits and hope to be in the waiting pool by the end of September!

Some of you may be wondering what an open adoption is all about.  First, the expectant mother actually chooses us and then we have a meeting and can decide if we are a right fit for each other.  Either party can go their separate ways or decide to get to know each other better.  At that time, we would be taken out of the waiting pool.  Our agency prefers the expectant mother to not choose a couple until she is 7 months along.  Our agency does a-lot of counseling to make sure she is ready to place her child up for adoption and that she understand that although the relationship is open we are the parents.  I originally had several concerns and some insecurities about open adoption but I have a better understanding now and what it means to our child.

The goal of the agency is to have a relationship where you feel like extended family and I hope that as well.  Will it be odd, at first?  Maybe.  Will there be ups and downs?  Yes but we will work through those issues unless, of course, they put our child in danger  – emotionally or physically.

Who am I?  I love to be with family and friends.  Laughter is so important and always makes me feel better.  I love silly movies that are made for 18 – 30 guys (The Hangover, SuperBad, Harold & Kumar, Super Troopers, etc), music especially country, and almost anything crafty.  I love to scrapbook with a bunch of girlfriends or make jewelry!

Thanks for dropping by.

Lis
